A popular contest featuring youth is back for the 2026 Mariposa Butterfly Festival.

Applications for the “Little Miss Butterfly and Little Mr. Monarch” contest are now available, according to Tarah Eastwood Kerber, organizer of the event.

Those two chosen will be based on nominations from the public. That began in 2019 and Eastwood said it has worked out well.

It’s going to be really exciting,” Eastwood said of this year’s competition.

This year’s Mariposa Butterfly Festival will be held May 2-3 at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds.

A nomination form is available in this week’s newspaper. The rules are quite simple:

• Youth ages 5-8

• Must be a Mariposa County resident

• Must be nominated

The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 17. To nominate a youth, simply fill out the ballot in this week’s newspaper (ballot on page B6). Once completed, send the ballots to Little Miss Butterfly, c/o Mariposa Gazette, P.O. Box 38, Mariposa, CA 95338. Forms can also be dropped off at the newspaper office at 4989 Highway in Mariposa. Downloaded forms will be accepted. There is no limit on the number of a times a youth can be nominated.

For Eastwood, the criteria is wide open. She said they are looking for youth who are kind, helpful, caring, giving, hard working and “just really a great kid.

The winners will receive the title as well as a crown. In addition, they will be participating in the Butterfly Festival Parade as well as other events in the area.
