Madera County residents are invited to the annual free household hazardous waste dropoff event at Yosemite High School.

This year it’s being held on Saturday, July 25 at the school located at 50200 School Road/ Road 427 in Oakhurst.

The collection runs from 8 a.m. to noon. This event is for household hazardous waste only; businesses will not be accepted. Arrive early — the drop-off line gets long.

Accepted items include aerosol cans, ammonia based cleaners, antifreeze, brake fluid, batteries, cell phones, computers, deodorizers, drain cleaners, DVD/VCRs, electrical cords, florescent lights, gasoline, herbicides, household needles, latex paint, medical electronics, mercury-containing items, motor oil, oil-based paint, oil filters, oven cleaners, pesticides, pharmaceutical drugs, pool chemicals, spot removers, televisions, water-based paint and wood preservatives.

Items not accepted include ammunition, bio/bodily waste, large compressed gas cylinders, large appliances, radioactive material, trash and tires.

Restrictions include a limit of 15 gallons of liquid or 125 pounds of solids per vehicle, per trip. Collection is on a first come, first served basis with those arriving after noon not being served.
