Sierra Artists Gallery

Penny Otwell has been painting outdoors and making drawings in Yosemite since 1964, using a portable field easel.

Searching for movement and design in her compositions gives her paintings a style all her own.

You can see her work at The Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite and the Sierra Artists Gallery in Mariposa (5031 Highway 140), where Otwell is the featured artist this March.

Women’s networking meetup

Carlyn Carter Consulting is hosting a Women’s Networking Meetup on March 26 from noon – 1 p.m. at Ignite Space (4996 7th Street).

Student led Music festival

Students from the Rotary Interact Club at Mariposa County High School will be hosting “Student Spring Festival” on March 28, from 5-9 p.m. at the Arts Park.

While the event is free to attend, donations are appreciated and encouraged as the group is fundraising to have air purifiers added to the locker rooms at MCHS.

Rancher-to-Rancher event

Sierra Foothill Conservancy will host a Rancher-to-Rancher event on March 28, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McKenzie Table Mountain Preserve in Clovis.

Presenters Peter Donovan, Billy Freeman, Kent Reeves and fellow ranchers will share the financial and ecological benefits of planned grazing and herd impact through discussions and on-site soil health demonstrations.

Free lunch provided. This event is free; registration is required for attendance and lunch. Register at www.sierrafoothill.org.

Sierra Foothill Conservancy

Sierra Foothill Conservancy will host Photography & Naturalizing at Stockton Creek Preserve, led by SFC docent/CA Naturalist/ photographer Jeannine Andre on Saturday, March 28, 8-11 a.m.

Meet at the Stockton Creek Nature Preserve entrance next to the Mariposa County High School track.

This event is $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Advance registration required. Register at www.sierrafoothill.org.

Cowboy Day

The Mariposa Museum and History Center presents the Third Annual Cowboy Day fundraiser on March 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mariposa Museum and History Center (5119 Jessie Street).

Admission is $10 and children ages six and under are free. There will be live music, vendors, food trucks, games, cowboy poetry and much more!

Featured Artist

April’s Featured Artist is Rosalie Thurston.

Rosalie Thurston has always had a passion for art, from crafts and sewing to creative design.

Three years ago, she discovered painting, opening a new world of creative expression.

Now a professional painter, Rosalie shares her talent through vibrant works inspired by Yosemite and historic Mariposa, capturing both the beauty of the landscape and her own imaginative journey.

The Sierra Artists Gallery is located at 5031 Highway 140 in Mariposa.

Facelift slated for April 11

Mariposa Facelift is set to go on Saturday, April 11. It’s a full day of community, stewardship and celebration.

Start the morning with donation-based yoga at 7:15 a.m., then help clean up Mariposa town from 8.a.m–noon.

L&J’s Tacos will be onsite from 11 a.m.–1 p.m., followed by a raffle at 12:30 p.m.

Wrap up the day at The Grove House with a fundraiser after party featuring live music from Water Tower from 7-10 p.m.

Master Gardeners Webinar

Plant Once, Harvest Forever: Perennial Vegetable Explained will take place Tuesday, April 14, from 6-7:30 p.m. This is a free Zoom webinar open to all. Understand what perennial vegetables are and why they matter for resilient, low-input food systems. Identify key perennial vegetables suitable for different climates and garden scales. Apply basic strategies for planting, maintaining and harvesting perennial vegetables successfully. Presented by the UC Master Gardeners of Mariposa County.

Ladies Tea

Soroptimist International of Mariposa is having their annual Ladies Tea on April 18 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Mariposa Senior Center (5246 Spriggs Lane). Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased from Soroptimist members or at Happy Burger. Wear your “Sunday Best” and come enjoy assorted teas, finger sandwiches, desserts and silent auction.

Shredding event scheduled

An event where local residents and businesses can shred documents is set for April 18 at the Methodist Church in Mariposa. It will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church parking lot, located at 6th and Bullion streets. All documents will be shredded securely and people can watch it happen. There is a suggested donation of $8 per standard file size box.

Annual Spring Plant Sale

UC Master Gardeners of Mariposa County are hosting the Annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, April 25 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds/Amigo Stage area.

Mosquito Fish available ($5.00) bring cooler.

Veggies, CA Natives, herbs, annuals, perennials and more. Cash or check only. Bring boxes to transport plants.

FFA Boosters

The 30th Annual FFA Boosters Dinner Dance will take place on Saturday, April 25 at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds.

The theme this year is Bourbon Street Bash and doors open at 5 p.m. with a prime rib dinner served at 6:30.

There will be a hosted bar. Must be 21 or older to attend. Tickets will go on sale March 28 at 8 a.m. for $100 each and can be purchased at Bootjack Feed, Mariposa Feed or online at www.mariposaffaboosters.com

Trade AA and Narcotics meetings

Trade Recovery Center hosts Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings and Narcotics Anonymous meetings for anyone seeking support in their recovery journey.

Whether you’re just starting your recovery or continuing your path, this is a safe, welcoming and confidential space to connect with others who understand.

AA meetings take place at Trade Recovery Center (5112 Bullion Street) on Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 5-6 p.m.

Narcotics Anonymous meetings take place in the same location on Tuesdays from noon-1 p.m.

These meetings are open to anyone seeking support. Walk-ins are welcome and sign up is not required.

Coffee and refreshments provided.

Mariposa Beekeepers

Mariposa Beekeepers meet every third Monday of the month, March through October. Meetings are held at the Mariposa County Library from 7-8 p.m.

Wheelchairs needed

The Mariposa Yosemite Rotary Club is seeking old wheelchairs, crutches and walkers.

The items will be used through the HERO Wheelchair Exchange program. People who want to donate, or those who need a wheelchair, should call Dave Wise at (209) 742-7004.

AA meetings

The How It Works Alcoholics Anonymous support group meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Hall on 5119 Bullion Street.

How It Works provides support and meetings designed for those seeking help for alcohol addiction and anyone interested in learning about the 12 step recovery model.

Lactation Lounge

Mariposa County Lactation Lounge takes place the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in the Mariposa County Library Community Room (4978 10th Street).

Come join the group for tea and baked goods and sit in on the community support circle for expecting and new parents. Learn about the benefits of breastfeeding and receive support around common challenges while making lasting connections. The Lactation Lounge is made possible through the collaborative efforts of California WIC and the Central California Alliance for Health.

Coulterville monthly Odd Market

Come buy or sell some odd treasures at the monthly Odd Market, every third Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the IOOF hall, 5030 Main Street, Coulterville. You never know what we will show you! Books, books and books

Books Galore is a used bookstore in Mariposa County located at the Mariposa County Library. Operated by the Mariposa County Friends of the Library, Books Galore offers a wide variety of books, DVDs, audio books and CDs at low prices. The store is open two days a week: Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Book donations are accepted every Monday and Friday in the bookstore. Proceeds help support the Mariposa County Library System.

Quilting group meetings

The Mariposa PieceMakers Quilt group meets the second Saturday of each month at the Mariposa Lutheran Church.

The two-hour meeting begins at 9:15 a.m. and anyone interested in quilting regardless of sewing experience. For more information, call Kim Torvinen at (209) 966-4953.

Republican Central Committee meetings

The Mariposa County Republican Central Committee meets monthly on the third Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The location of the meeting is the American Legion Hall (5117 Bullion Street). The public is invited to attend.

Monthly Dem meetings

The Mariposa Democratic Club will be conducting monthly meetings to address “The State of the Country.”

The meetings will be held on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. to the boardroom of the Board of Supervisors.

A special guest will be featured at each meeting.

AA and ALANON meetings

There are various Alcoholics Anonymous and ALANON meetings in Mariposa. The Mariposa fellowship in Bootjack meets everyday at 7 p.m. There are noon meetings on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

The women’s group meets Wednesday at 6 p.m. and the men meet Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The 24-hour hotline is (209) 966-3110 and the website is www.aamariposafellowship.org. Zoom meetings are available; see the website for details.

A “how it works” AA group meets every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Hall at 5117 Bullion Street.

The hotline is (209) 966-2518. There is a Yosemite Park meeting at the chapel on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Living with an alcoholic? Join the sister program of Alcoholics Anonymous, ALANON. Meetings are Thursdays at noon at the American Legion Hall. The hotline is (209) 966- 2518.

Singles dining group

The 55 Plus Singles Dining Group meets the third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at various local restaurants. For information, call Cynthia Lee at (209) 769-6549.

Senior Center bingo & hall for rent

Play bingo at the Senior Center, 5256 Spriggs Lane, on the first Friday of every month.

Doors and kitchen open at 5 p.m. and games begin at 6:15 p.m.

Everyone 18 or older is welcome and people are asked to arrive before the start of the first game. The hall is also available to rent for gatherings, parties and more.

VFW meetings

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6042 meets on the second Thursday of the month at the VFW Hall, located at the intersection of Jones Street and Highway 140.

Dinner is served at 6 p.m. and meetings begin at 7.

Weekly Civil Air Patrol meetings

The Mariposa squadron of the Civil Air Patrol meets every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mariposa-Yosemite Airport, 5020 Macready Way.

The squadron welcomes cadets (12-18) and senior members (18 and up). Visit mariposayosemite.cap.gov/ or go to a meeting to learn more.

Cars, Bikes and Coffee

Mariposa Heritage House and The Coffee Shop (5158 Highway 140) host “Cars, Bikes and Coffee” on the first and third Saturday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m.

Bingo

The American Legion Hall at Bullion and 12th streets in Mariposa will host bingo on the third Friday of the month.

Doors open at 2:15 p.m. and bingo begins at 3 p.m. Hot dogs, Polish dogs and chips will be sold.

American Legion meetings

American Legion Post 567 meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the American Legion Hall, located at 5117 Bullion Street in Mariposa.

Dinner is served at 6 p.m. and meetings begin at 6:30 p.m.

UPPER ROOM Women’s Bible Study

The UPPER ROOM Ladies are still meeting!

Manna House continues to need monetary and food donations.

Manna House is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is located at 5127 Charles Street.

UC Master Gardeners helpline

The Master Gardeners Helpline is available on Tuesdays 9 a.m. to noon and Thursdays 2 to 5 p.m.

Master Gardeners staff the Helpline and welcome home gardening questions of all types. If Gardeners can’t answer your question right away, they will research and get back to you as soon as possible.

The Helpline can be accessed at (209) 966-7078, mgmariposa@ucdavis.edu or at 5009 Fairgrounds Road.

Home visits can also be arranged to look at the problem directly.

Sheriff’s Foundation accepting donations for animal control

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Foundation accepts donations for Mariposa County Animal Control.

Donations are tax-deductible and are earmarked for use by Animal Control.

Donate by mailing a check to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Foundation, P.O. Box 5008-158, Mariposa, CA 95338 with “Animal Control” in the “for” section.

Donations in increments of $25 are available for selection.

Mariposa Museum and History Center volunteers needed

The Mariposa Museum & History Center is always looking for volunteers who are interested in donating their time at the museum.

There are a variety of tasks or roles you can volunteer for, such as docent, tour guide, maintenance, landscaping, research, gift shop, board member and more.

Parkinson’s support group
