“A Night at the Races” is set for Saturday, May 2 starting at 5 p.m. with mint juleps, barbecue buffet and race “wagering,” ahead of the “greatest two minutes in sports” at 8 p.m.
This marks the third year for the Kentucky Derby themed event designed to raise funds for the Oakhurst Community Center where the event is held.
The evening will include a no-host bar, silent auction and winner’s circle, big screens and prizes for best dressed and best hat. Live music will be provided by the Yosemite Jazz Band.
Tickets to the fundraiser are $75 per person; OCC supporters are $500, table sponsors are $1,000 and event sponsors are $2,500.
The Oakhurst Community Center was built barn-raising style on donated land in the 1960s by members of local service clubs and they’ve supported the OCC ever since it opened in ‘65.
Still standing without any regular Madera County funding in unincorporated Oakhurst, the community center is used for everything from weddings and parties to festivals and community events. The OCC is an essential part of daily life in Eastern Madera County, open for every election and evacuation that comes along — and much more.
It would be hard to imagine the community without the community center. But is it sustainable without community support?
There’s not only regular maintenance but deferred maintenance, as well, and costs continue to rise with PG&E bills north of $5,000 as far back as 2024 when the event was established.
OCC operates with an all-volunteer board of directors, which includes representatives from Oakhurst’s two Rotary Clubs, Soroptimists, Kiwanis, Lions, the Chamber of Commerce, Fresno Flats Historic Village and Park, Sierra Senior Center and Mountain Little League (which rents the field from OCC). The seats also include at-large members.
