You can help people age with dignity and respect

Every May, the United States observes Older Americans Month, a time to honor the contributions of our senior residents and ensure they have the support to age with dignity.

This year’s national theme, “Champion Your Health,” focuses on proactive wellness and community partnerships.

While the state of California prepares for a future where one-quarter of its population will be over 60 by 2030, Mariposa County is already there. In many ways, our community serves as a predictive model for the rest of the nation.

A unique demographic landscape

Mariposa County’s population structure has undergone a dramatic shift. While children under 18 make up just 17 percent of our residents, adults aged 60 and older now comprise a staggering 38 percent of our population.

This “inverted pyramid” is the result of two long-term trends: Mariposa’s reputation as a premier destination for retirees and a lack of diverse career opportunities that often leads younger generations to migrate toward urban centers.

However, being “asset-rich” doesn’t always mean being “cash-secure.Mariposa boasts a homeownership rate of 71.5 percent — vastly higher than the state average — yet many local seniors face lower median incomes and higher poverty rates than their urban counterparts.

This creates a “paradox of poverty” where residents own their homes but struggle with the rising costs of healthcare, food and utilities.

The challenges of aging in place

Living in our beautiful, rugged terrain comes with specific hurdles:

• Housing maintenance: Much of the county’s housing was built in the 1970s or earlier. For seniors on fixed incomes, deferred maintenance — like roof repairs or heating upgrades — can quickly become a safety hazard.

Isolation: With residents spread across remote areas like Greeley Hill, Wawona and Hornitos, geographic isolation makes accessing pharmacies and medical care a significant challenge.

Economic vulnerability: Statistics show a notable gender disparity in our community; while only 2 percent of local men are widowed, 15 percent of women in the county are widows, many of whom are navigating the challenges of aging alone on limited budgets.

The “Aging Network:” Your local resources

To combat these challenges, the Mariposa County Health and Human Services Agency work closely with the Area 12 Agency on Aging (A12AA).

This regional nonprofit acts as the backbone of support for seniors in the Sierra foothills. For more information on A12AA services, residents can call (209) 532-6272 or (800) 510-2020.

Based at the Mariposa Senior Center on Spriggs Lane, under the direction of program manager Lydia Arre, the “aging network” provides vital services, including:

• Nutrition: Meals on Wheels and congregate dining.

Wellness: Yoga, strength and mobility training for those 60 and over.

• Support: Medicare counseling (HICAP), legal assistance and caregiver respite.

Help wanted: Your voice is needed

The Mariposa County Commission on Aging serves as the official advisory body to the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors. To be effective, the commission needs to hear from every corner of our county — but currently, there are critical vacancies on the commission.

We are seeking representatives for Supervisor Districts 2, 3 and 5, as well as two at-large positions. Additionally, there are two vacancies for Mariposa residents to serve on the Area 12 Advisory Council (A12AA).

If you want to ensure our infrastructure, healthcare and safety nets are built to serve our senior majority, please consider applying.

To apply, contact the Mariposa County Clerk of the Board Office at (209) 742-0800.

Public meeting: Join the commission for a joint public meeting with the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) advisory framework on Tuesday, May 26, at 1:30 p.m. at the Mariposa Senior Center.

By filling these seats and participating in the conversation, we can ensure that Mariposa remains a place where residents don’t just grow old, but thrive with security and purpose.

Don Fox serves on the Mariposa Commission on Aging and Mariposa County Delegate, Area 12 Agency on Aging.
