At least two small fires were extinguished in Eastern Madera County recently, providing a reminder to maintain defensible space around property and keep a go-bag ready.
The Cascadel Fire was reported at about 3 p.m. in the 58200 block of Road 225 near Cascadel Road in North Fork on Monday, July 27.
The vegetation fire was burning on private land in light grass with a moderate rate of spread. Fire crews responded quickly and the fire was contained. It was later determined to have been ¼ acre total per the National Interagency Fire Center.
At about 2:40 p.m. on Friday, July 31, the Lewis Fire near Highway 41 and Sugar Pine was reported at ½ acre, burning in grass and logging slash with single tree torching and structures immediately threatened.
The road at Highway 41 and Road 630 was closed and an evacuation order was issued for the immediate vicinity due to immediate threat to life.
Forward progress of the fire was stopped just before 3:30 p.m. and the evacuation order was later reduced to a warning as residents were told to be prepared to evacuate again should conditions change.
The fire was later confirmed at ½ acre.
