Members of the Mariposa FFA welding program recently traveled to Hartnell College in Salinas to tour the school’s Agricultural Mechatronics and Advanced Manufacturing program.

The visit held special significance for agricultural mechanics instructor Felipe Barrientos, as Salinas is his hometown. During the tour, students met Richard Chapman, a Mariposa County High School alumnus from the Class of 2006 who now helps lead the program at Hartnell.

Chapman introduced students to the innovative work being done at the college, which focuses on developing automation systems used in packing warehouses and crop harvesting. Students were able to see firsthand how robotics, mechatronics and advanced fabrication are shaping the future of agriculture.

The tour provided a valuable look at how the welding and fabrication skills students are learning in high school connect directly to emerging careers in agricultural technology and advanced manufacturing.

Mariposa FFA members left the visit with a deeper understanding of the role technology will play in the future of agriculture and the opportunities available to students interested in agricultural mechanics.

The Mariposa FFA Welding Team continued its strong season with another victory at the Hollister Welding Competition, earning first place High Team honors.

The win marks the team’s third consecutive first-place team finish this season, highlighting the dedication and skill of the students competing in agricultural mechanics events.

Several Mariposa students also earned top individual placements. Brady Arebalo placed first High Individual, Ben Lingenfelter earned third High Individual and Cody Poor finished fourth High Individual.

The welding competition tested students’ abilities in welding techniques, fabrication skills and overall workmanship.

Competitors are evaluated on precision, safety and quality of their welds.

With three team victories so far this season, the Mariposa welding team has continued to demonstrate the strength of the school’s agricultural mechanics program.

Mariposa FFA members had a successful weekend competing in two Career Development Event competitions held at UC Davis and Gridley.

Last weekend began at the UC Davis Field Day, where both the Novice and Advanced Parliamentary Procedure teams advanced to the Final six and finished fourth High Team overall in their divisions. Livie Twiss earned recognition as the High Overall Chairman in the Novice division.

Members of the Novice Parliamentary Procedure team included Sawyer Newsom, Isabel Shanks, Brylee Bean, Livie Twiss, Rio Pelote, Bella Martinez and Cooper Wight.

The Advanced team consisted of Cora Grasso, Izzy Whited, Hailey Watson, Celina Heard, Abby Beery, Zoey Hofstee and Sawyer Malisch.

The following day, both teams competed again at the Gridley Field Day, where they each earned second place High Team finishes.

Heard was named High Chairman and received her first belt buckle award.

Mariposa FFA’s Veterinary Science team also competed at the Gridley contest. Team members Whited, Martinez, Kensley Silva, and Bella Chavez placed sixth High Team in their first competition of the season.

The competitions provided students with opportunities to build leadership, teamwork and career skills while representing Mariposa FFA.
