Mariposa County is still looking for someone to operate an emergency shelter, but it’s already got the beds.
The 15 small pallet homes owned by the county have now been moved from the former Connections Shelter to the site of the former homeless encampment off Frank Wilson Road.
The encampment at that location was shut down in June 2024.
In an email to staff last week, Interim Director Mandi Brum, of Mariposa County Health & Human Services Administration (HHSA), said a revised request for proposal (RFP) will seek to locate a vendor “to operate an overnight shelter model.”
“HHSA staff will not be operating a homeless shelter with the Pallet units,” Brum wrote.
HHSA has committed $150,000 for shelter operations.
The pallet homes can accommodate up to 18 people, with 12 single-occupancy units and three double-occupancy units.
A spokesperson for HHSA would not rule out Frank Wilson Road as an option for an emergency shelter if the vendor chooses it.
HHSA is working with PG&E, Development Services and Mariposa County Fire to scope potential sites for an emergency shelter.
Connections, the county’s only 24-hour homeless shelter, was operated by the non-profit Alliance for Community Transformations, on St. Andrew Road, near John C. Fremont Hospital.
The shelter closed July 28.
