A Bootjack man charged with violently assaulting his wife and son will be sent to a state hospital in an effort to restore his mental competency before continuing with the legal case.
Aleksandr Galkin, 46, is charged with felony domestic violence, obstructing a law enforcement officer and two counts of felony criminal threats.
On June 9, Mariposa County Superior Court Judge Michael Fagalde committed Galkin to the Cali fornia Department of State Hospitals.
If Galkin refuses to take his medication while hospitalized, Fagalde has authorized the use of involuntary anti-psychotic drugs to assist Galkin in regaining competency.
Galkin speaks Russian and does not appear to speak or understand much English, which has slowed the court proceedings.
Galkin needs a Russian translator whenever he appears in court. Likewise, his court ordered mental health assessment required a Russian speaking psychologist.
The criminal charges stem from an incident March 3, when Galkin returned to his home in Bootjack at 1 a.m. and allegedly threatened his wife with a knife after punching her several times in the face and head.
Galkin told his wife that she and other family members “were a mirage” and forced her to cover her face and eat marijuana, according to a restraining order filed by his wife.
The next morning, Galkin allegedly attacked his 21-year-old son.
The couple have a 14-year-old son and a one-year old daughter. They have been married since 2023.
Galkin has been in the Mariposa County Jail for more than three months.
When his mental competency is restored, Galkin will be returned to Mariposa County to face criminal charges.
