Caltrans, in collaboration with the city of Madera, broke ground on a $24 million Highway 145 maintenance and rehab project in Madera.
Caltrans officials said the project will repave, re-stripe, add bike lanes, create several new roundabouts and improve curbs and sidewalks along a four-mile stretch of Highway 145 through the heart of downtown Madera.
Along with Madera’s $3 million contribution, elements including decorative lighting, wider sidewalks and more landscaping will provide additional shade and beauty for the area.
“The project will help revitalize Madera’s downtown, creating safer, more welcoming spaces for walking, biking, shopping and connecting with local businesses,” said Caltrans District 6 director Michael Navarro.
“Complete street elements such as sidewalk gap closures, improved crosswalks and bicycle facilities directly support economic vitality by making downtown more accessible and attractive. Caltrans is proud to work alongside the city of Madera and watch this project come to fruition.”
Funding for the project includes roughly $21.1 million from the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) and $3.0 million from the City of Madera.
