Authorities recovered a body from Yosemite Falls on July 4, but few details were available.
The death was confirmed by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office, which also acts as the county coroner.
The body was discovered at the bottom of Upper Fall, said Kristie Mitchell, a spokesperson for the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office.
The cause and manner of death are unknown.
She said no other details — like the name, age or gender of the victim — were available.
Mitchell said the National Park Service is investigating.
The park service released the following Monday afternoon: “National Park Service personnel responded to the discovery of human remains in the inner gorge of the Yosemite Falls area. Recovery operations were conducted. The investigation is ongoing with assistance from the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch. Additional information will be released as appropriate.
Upper Yosemite Fall is the tallest (1,400 feet) of three sections that make Yosemite Falls the tallest waterfall in North America.
