The Madera County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office announced the successful completion of its 2026 Defaulted Property Tax Sale, an important annual process that strengthens public funding while helping return delinquent properties to productive use within the community.
The online auction, conducted over a four-day period in May, resulted in the recovery of more than $1.3 million in unpaid taxes and penalties.
As a result of the sale and redemption efforts leading up to the event, dozens of parcels were restored to current tax status, generating renewed revenue for local public services and agencies throughout Madera County.
Funds collected through property taxes help fund essential county services such as public safety, schools, libraries, infrastructure improvements and special districts.
Prior to the tax sale, the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office conducted outreach efforts through mailed notices, public advertising and direct communication with property owners to encourage payment of delinquent taxes and helped many taxpayers redeem their properties before the auction date.
“Our office remains committed to proactive outreach and taxpayer education throughout the year,” said Tracy Kennedy, county treasurer-tax collector.
“We work closely with property owners to provide information about payment options and redemption opportunities whenever possible. The tax sale process itself involves months of preparation, legal notifications, research and coordination to ensure accuracy, accountability and transparency.”
Properties that remain tax-defaulted for five years or more may become subject to the county’s Power to Sell authority beginning July 1, making them eligible for inclusion in the future tax sale scheduled for May 2027.
Property owners are strongly encouraged to contact the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office as early as possible to avoid additional costs and potential loss of property ownership.
Residents and investors interested in participating in future tax sales may subscribe to receive notifications and updates regarding registration deadlines, auction schedules and available property lists through the County’s Electronic Alerts system at www.maderacounty.com/alerts
