A closed sign in the front door of China Station Restaurant 5004 Highway 140. After an annual inspection July 24, the county confirms enforcement action for health violations, fire and safety issues. TOM LYDEN
Walk up to China Station Restaurant and you will be greeted by a locked glass door, and a homemade sign with one word, emphatic and mysterious.
Closed.
Mariposa County is being somewhat tight-lipped about why.
The county will only say it has an ongoing investigation “requiring some enforcement for health violations, in addition to fire and safety issues.”
The closing apparently happened after the county’s annual inspection by Mariposa County Environmental Health on July 24.
“Once the investigation is complete and a determination has been made, we will work to inform the public,” said Kazzy Cunningham, public information officer for the Mariposa County Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA).
The restaurant is located in the Village Shopping center, at the intersection of Highways 49 and 140.
Efforts to reach the registered owner of the business, Kam Yen Lee, were unsuccessful.
The restaurant has had five different owners going back to 1997.
The restaurant, over its various incarnations, has had previous investigations and enforcement actions. The county has yet to provide any information about those cases to the Mariposa Gazette, which is seeking the records under the California Public Records Act (CPRA).
The restaurant has a nearly three star rating (2.9 rating) from 182 reviews on Yelp.
