Editor,
Outsourcing our Visitor Center seems like a bad idea. Some visitors are more comfortable using legacy modes of communicating and gathering information. They need to interact with people, not algorithms.
Our Visitor Center staff includes folks who’ve worked in Yosemite for years (and decades combined). Their massive organizational knowledge about the park, means they can address complex concerns without a lot of back-and-forth.
Our visitors need them. We need them.
People the world over are used to having that resource here in Mariposa. “Moving it” to Oakhurst would be closing it. That would reduce Mariposa’s role and image as a hospitable town with high-touch travel services.
People who want to use online resources can do that. Let’s not abandon travelers who still want legacy services, and let’s still offer them here.
