A wildfire in western Mariposa County consumed more than 1,000 acres last week but has now been contained.

The fire is a reminder of the dangerous fire conditions now impacting this region, all of California and most of the Western United States.

The Van Fire scorched 1,107 acres. It was reported on July 8 northeast of White Rock Road in the Catheys Valley area. The fire grew quickly in size after is started, prompting CAL FIRE to dispatch helicopters and airplanes to battle the blaze.

Dispatch traffic indicated the fire was moving quickly in hot conditions with wind. An aerial photo provided by CAL FIRE indicates the charred landscape the fire left behind.

By July 11, fire officials had listed the Van Fire as fully contained. The CAL FIRE report said the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

That area is located near the Merced County line and close to the community of Le Grande.

No structures were damaged in the fire and there were no reported injuries, according to CAL FIRE.

The official report indicated 10 engines, two water tenders, two hand crews, a bulldozer and a total of 70 personnel were utilized in fighting the fire. Air tankers were visible for several hours after the blaze broke out in the remote part of Mariposa County.
