On Wednesday, June 17, there was a rare event in the sky: the occultation — covering — of the planet Venus by the Moon in broad daylight. Venus disappeared at 11:38 a.m. in Mariposa and reappeared at 12:48 p.m. It was visible to the naked eye and easily visible in binoculars. This composite photo was taken by Gazette columnist Manny Leinz from a suburb of Phoenix, Ariz., and is a combination of three photos taken prior to the occultation and five photos after.
