Can’t park here.

A planned weekend on the water ended up with a truck under the water in Bass Lake after its owner made a simple mistake.

Coincidentally, the saga unfolded while the Madera County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Dive Team and Boat Patrol were conducting training at Bass Lake on Saturday, April 18.

As the training concluded a member of the dive team was contacted at the Wishon Boat Launch near the dam on the south shore regarding a vehicle in the lake, according to officials.

Boat and dive deputies responded and found a pickup truck with an empty jet ski trailer fully submerged at the end of the ramp.

The owner of the vehicle, reportedly from Chowchilla, was on scene. The vehicle was unoccupied when it entered the water as the driver attempted to launch a pair of jet skis, witnesses said.

Sheriff’s office divers assisted the responding tow truck in rigging the vehicle for removal from the lake.

MCSO reminded the public to always ensure a vehicle is in park with the parking brake engaged before exiting, especially on boat ramps or inclines, to prevent similar incidents.

The truck was removed without injury or environmental impact, MCSO said.
