Swimmers continue strong showings, advance deeper into tournament qualifying

The Yosemite High School swim team made a strong statement at the NSL League Championships with athletes stepping up in relays, individual events and diving.

The event was held at Sierra High School on Thursday, April 30.

Coach Rae Rockey said the meet was filled with fast swims, league medals, exciting races and moments that showed the continued growth and heart of the Yosemite swim program.

“The boys’ relay teams had a big day in the pool,” said Rockey.

The boys 200 freestyle relay team of Cooper Flanagan, Wesley Barlett, Joseph Nichols and Kaiden Rockey earned a second-place medal showing speed, teamwork and determination from start to finish.

The boys 400 freestyle relay team of Ian Judd, Benjamin Banks, Landon Bylow and Luke Georgeson also battled hard and finished in third place, the coach said, earning another league medal for Yosemite.

Badgers also had several standout individual performances.

Kaiden Rockey earned two league medals placing first in the 200 freestyle and second in the 50 freestyle.

“His races showed strength, speed and the ability to compete at a high level when it mattered most,” said the coach.

In the 100 freestyle, Cooper Flanagan and Joseph Nichols both delivered outstanding swims, finishing second and third. Their performances helped add to Yosemite’s success and showed just how much the team has grown throughout the season, Rockey said.

“One of the most exciting parts of the meet was watching Yosemite’s freshmen step up in a big way. Millie Van Kopp had an amazing swim in the 500 freestyle, placing second and earning a league medal. For a freshman to take on one of the toughest events in high school swimming and finish near the top is a huge accomplishment.”

Wesley Barlett also swam his way into the top three, earning a third place medal in the 200 individual medley. The 200 IM is one of the most demanding events because swimmers must compete in all four strokes.

“Wesley showed focus, toughness and determination from start to finish.”

Yosemite’s girls’ team also represented with heart and determination by athletes including Mack Gauthier, Mikaila Ruiz, Kate Vanlandingham and Millie Van Kopp.

“Their effort, teamwork and willingness to compete helped make the league championship meet a strong showing for the entire Yosemite swim program.”

Rockey said the championship meet ended with a splash as Yosemite swimmers took on the diving competition. Alice Bond, Jax Georgeson, Wesley Barlett and Landon Bylow all stepped up to the board, giving their best effort as they worked to earn diving medals for Yosemite.

“Each athlete showed bravery, focus and strong technique, helping close out the NSL League Championships with excitement and team spirit.”

Yosemite will now turn its focus to the CIF Valley Championships, where both the boys’ and girls’ relay teams and top individual swimmers have earned the opportunity to compete at the next level.

Leading the way for Yosemite are Rockey, Flanagan, Nichols and Van Kopp, who will each have a lane at Valley with the chance to race for top rankings and continue pushing toward the next stage of competition.

“For these athletes, Valley Championships are more than just another meet — they are a chance to represent Yosemite, compete against some of the fastest swimmers in the section and see how far their hard work can take them. The goal is to swim fast, fight for top placements and try to earn times strong enough to advance to the CIF State Championships the following week at Clovis West High School.”

From relay medals to individual success, freshman standouts, diving highlights and both boys’ and girls’ relay teams moving on to Valley, Rockey said the swimming Badgers finished the NSL League Championships with pride, heart and momentum.

“This team continues to grow, compete and build something special for the future.”
