Hosted by students from the Rotary Interact Club at Mariposa County High School, the “Student Spring Festival” was an absolute hit this year.
On March 28, the free fundraiser event for Rotary Interact Club saw a huge turnout at the Mariposa Arts Park.
“It went great and there was a huge turnout,” said Spirit Dewitt.
“I haven’t seen so many people out in the art park like that for a couple years!”
Student-led music performances used to happen a lot more often in Mariposa than they do now.
“Beat Harvest shows with Ava Burns used to be a big thing that showed off student talent,” said Xavier Dacanay.
“Those student shows kind of stopped and there hasn’t really been anything. We wanted to change that.”
The group planned the event to not only showcase students and their musical talents, it was fundraiser for the Rotary Interact Club to raise funds for an air purification system in the locker rooms at MCHS.
“We raised about $1,300,” Dewitt said.
“That will allow us to get some pretty quality air purifiers!”
Among performers were local rock band JNX, The Remedies, members of the MCHS Jazz Band, Rosie Neogy, Clementine DiMorente and Bret Brown.
“Making this an annual thing would be really cool and we’d like to do it again,” Dewitt explained.
“Our next upcoming project will be a lithium battery collection up at the high school. We want to educate people about properly disposing of their batteries and make it a habit.”
