Shade to be added at park playground

Mariposa County Public Works will soon begin installing shade structures at the Mariposa Park playground.

Work is scheduled to begin on July 27, barring any delays and is expected to take approximately seven days to complete.

The new shade structures will make the playground more comfortable and accessible for families year-round, especially during the summer when temperatures regularly reach the upper 90s and can exceed 100 degrees.

Because the playground is one of the most heavily used amenities maintained by Mariposa County Parks & Recreation, providing shade was identified as a priority to improve the visitor experience and encourage outdoor recreation.

Community feedback highlighting the need for additional shade at the playground also played an important role in prioritizing the project.

The project includes the installation of two shade structures that will cover the playground area, excluding the swings.

During installation, the entire upper park area will be closed.

Day Camp will temporarily relocate to the lower pavilion area during the closure.

Funding for the project comes from the Public Works Department, Probation Department and Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA).

Support from Probation and HHSA helped make the project possible.

The installation builds on improvements made late this spring, when shade structures were added next to the Mariposa Park Pool to create additional shaded areas for pool visitors.

These shade structures are a meaningful improvement for our community,” said Parks and Recreation Manager Lexie Verdugo.

They will make the playground more comfortable and accessible for families throughout the year while enhancing one of our most popular park amenities.

She added, “We’re always looking for opportunities to improve our parks and we’re excited to see this project become a reality.

Anyone with questions about the project may contact the Public Works Department at (209) 966-5356.
