For most kids, summer break is a highly anticipated countdown— a long-awaited escape from the classroom filled with endless sunshine and unforgettable adventures.
Twelve-year-old Mason Sainz kicked off his vacation on the ultimate high note.
Just a few weeks ago, his Little League baseball team, the Giants, captured the Tournament of Champions title for the 12U group.
When asked if he is still sporting his hard-earned championship ring, Mason didn’t hesitate with his answer. “Yes,” with a smile in his voice, noting that the his new bling has some serious weight to it.
The winning streak didn’t stop at the end of baseball season, it had just begun.
Mason kept his momentum rolling right into the holiday weekend, reeling in first place at the annual Fourth of July Fishing Derby in Lushmeadows.
“I was excited,” Mason said about the victory.
“I really like the action of when the fish are fighting.”
Though he only picked up a fishing rod a few years ago after moving with his family to Mariposa, Mason has quickly developed impressive skills on the water.

He spent about four hours casting his line during the holiday event.
While the turnout was small, Mason’s performance proved to be unmatched.
He finished the day with the largest haul of the competition, pulling in seven bass.
“There were about three people in the competition,” Mason noted.
“I wish there were more, but maybe next year. I don’t think anyone else caught anything, so I felt good after I won.”
By dominating the water, Mason took home the derby’s cash prize pot of $15.
As for his earnings?
“I’m not sure what I’m going to spend it on yet,” he laughed.
With weeks of summer still ahead, Mason’s schedule remains packed with action.
His family is currently wrapping up a trip to Mammoth Lakes, but the adventures are far from over.
“Tomorrow we’re going to Six Flags,” Mason shared excitedly.
“After that, we’re going to Disneyland.”
Once his summer of non-stop fun and champion-level milestones wind down, Mason will head into the seventh grade at Mariposa Elementary School this fall.
