Editor,
I was listening to the candidates running for governor this morning and couldn’t believe the disrespect and interrupting and vitriol I was hearing.
These candidates are supposed to represent their constituents which is the people of this state in all our diversity. That includes you and me.
Yes, there are differing perspectives, each with their own validity. However, how are we going to ever come together to solve these problems unless we can have civil conversations where we listen to each other and give a moment of consideration to the other person’s perspective?
These Democrat and Republican “sides’’ are ridiculous. Within these parties are individuals with individual life experiences that create the reasons they think the way they do.
Some Democrats have Republican views on various things and the same the other way around. The parties are becoming or have become irrelevant. Why should one side win over the other when both have valid perspectives for millions of people?
There are no real winners when millions are not represented after and even during these elections.
If everyone is so charged up that they are all talking at once, we the people cannot hear anyone. There is no way I can think objectively about someones perspective, nor possibly change my perspective, if I can’t even discern it out of a cacophony of noise!
Yes, all the issues such as housing, homelessness and immigration are extremely important ones and we need to come together from all these various “sides’’ and figure it out with care. Innocent people are caught in the cross hairs.
If we really are “One Nation Under God” with liberty and justice for all, then how do these arrogant politicians on various “sides” justify their narrow minded positions?
Emotion has no place in these discussions. Neither does religious preference unless I see those who tout religious beliefs actually living the principles they advocate.
There was a separation of church and state for a reason. It’s about who you are and how you live and act towards your fellow citizens. That’s what counts, not which religion or party you advocate is the right one.
Practice listening.
