The first responders of Cedar Valley Volunteer Fire & Rescue Station 18 in Madera County invite the community to its annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, July 4 from 7-10:30 a.m.
Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, orange juice and coffee. T-shirts will also be for sale. Donations for breakfast are $15 for adults and $2 for children two-10 years old.
Proceeds benefit local emergency services.
Roughly five miles north of Oakhurst and to the east, Cedar Valley is a community of about 100 homes near the Lewis Creek National Scenic Trail, most of which are occupied full time by locals. Cedar Valley VFD celebrated its 50th year in 2022.
Cedar Valley Fire is part of Madera County Fire and they respond to an average of 180 to 190 calls a year. Their coverage area goes way beyond Cedar Valley to the Madera County line on the north, east to Dorstan, south near El Cid’s and west almost to Ahwahnee.
The vast majority are medical calls, some are vehicle accidents and they help the sheriff with search and rescue when people fall or are injured at Angel Falls and Corlieu Falls, Williams said.
The personnel staffing Cedar Valley are paid call firefighters (PCFs) who pay for most of their own training and offer thousands of hours in service to their communities. Sometimes, they go out of county, taking engines for a week or more at a time.
This week, the volunteers of Cedar Valley Fire and its Auxiliary are getting ready to flip some pancakes. This is one of two social fundraisers the fire department holds annually — the other is the Deep Pit BBQ. Each serves about 200 people.
They’re always grateful when people show up to support the community.
