The Mariposa County High School track and field team traveled to Waterford High School on April 29 for the Southern Athletic League Finals where several athletes placed and some advanced to the division championship.

The team has continued to achieve many personal records each meet.

The athletes who have had the greatest improvements, have been those who have been consistent and self-disciplined,” said coach Adrian Perez.

Training, nutrition, hydration and rest are essential.

During the meet, organizers recognized MCHS senior athletes competing this year which include Brandon Marquez, Wilde Ketron, Isaiah Diaz, Logan Hein, Eamon Fluharty, Liam Davis, Tania Marquez, Marley Gediman, Juniper Helling, Dana Munoz and Brittany Vargas.

They are naturally the leaders of the team and set the example for the younger athletes,” Perez said.

Most of them have been on the team for two years but a few started this year. Three of them are valedictorians (Tania Marquez, Gediman and Ketron). Every season it seems our team has multiple valedictorians. I think that says a lot about the culture of the team and it’s senior athletes.

Fluharty holds the second spot in the school’s record for discus.

He will be signing with Westmont College track later this week,” Perez explained.

I am always sad to see them move on, but also excited to see what they will do next.
