What began as a regular Wednesday ended tragically when four people died following a collision between a truck and a compact SUV in Madera County.
Just after 8:30 on Wednesday, Sept. 2, CHP Madera officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Road 9 and Avenue 21.
CHP said a preliminary investigation determined that a 2015 GMC Sierra occupied by two people was traveling eastbound on Avenue 21 toward the intersection of Road 9.
At the same time a 2022 Honda CR-V occupied by five people was traveling northbound on Road 9 approaching the intersection of Avenue 21.
Eastbound and westbound traffic on Avenue 21 is controlled by stop signs at the intersection. There are no stop signs controlling northbound or southbound traffic on Road 9.
As the Honda entered the intersection the GMC failed to stop at the posted stop sign and entered the intersection directly into the Honda’s path of travel, according to authorities.
The front of the GMC collided with the left side of the Honda causing major damage and resulting in the deaths of four occupants in the Honda.
The four victims in the Honda were identified as father and son Pedro Chavez Garvia, 42, and Pedro Chavez, 13, along with Gerardo Ramirez Aguilar, 36, and Cayetano Beyza-Mendoza, 52.
They died at the scene, according to reports.
The driver of the Honda, reported to be the uncle of the youngest victim, was hospitalized with serious injuries. The occupants of the GMC suffered minor injuries.
CHP said the crash remains under investigation. It was unknown at press time if drugs and/or alcohol were factors in this crash. All occupants were wearing their seatbelts.
Officials stressed the importance of exercising caution when approaching intersections.
