50th Annual Lions Club All-Star Game
The 50th Annual Lions Club All-Star Game was held at Tracy High School on Saturday, June 20.
This game featured top players from Tracy, Sonora, Calaveras, Oakdale, Escalon and Modesto schools in the North and Mariposa, Central Catholic, Patterson, Hilmar and Merced schools in the South.
Laten Butler was selected to the game to represent Mariposa. After his performance in the previous week’s game in Merced, Connor Filgas was invited by Frank Marques (head coach for the South team, from Hilmar High).
Butler returned kicks and played corner back, while Filgas played outside linebacker and special teams.
Filgas made his presence known on several tackles throughout the night. Butler was solid in coverage all night and came up with another signature play in his final high school game.
Late in the first half he recovered a fumble on defense, he broke two tackles and ran into the end zone for the South’s first point of the night.
Butler was selected “Most Inspirational” by his coaches and teammates.
Butler will participate in one final high school football event in London next month, where he will showcase his skills in a week long event with players from all over the country.
Butler will play football for the Merced JC Blue Devils in the fall.
Filgas finished off a memorable high school football career at MCHS. He has enlisted in the United States Coast Guard.
