At just eight years old, Aiden Harrington is already chasing down a dream that many athletes spend a lifetime trying to reach.
With aspirations to play professional soccer, Aiden is officially well on his way.
Following an intensive five-day Real Madrid soccer clinic held in Fresno last month, Aiden stood out among a massive pool of talent.
His performance earned him an elite selection to travel to Madrid, Spain, this coming December to train at Valdebebas — the prestigious, world-class Real Madrid Sports City.
“I was excited,” Aiden shared.
“My coach was really nice.”
Dedication to the game
Though he is only eight, Aiden has spent nearly half his life on the pitch.
Aiden has played other sports, but soccer has become his true love and he has no plans of slowing down any time soon.
“I tried t-ball and wrestling, but soccer is my favorite,” Aiden said.
“I play striker and goalie.”
Aiden’s dedication to the sport has become a year-round commitment.
He is highly involved with Mariposa Soccer, staying active across multiple leagues throughout the year.
“He does club, rec and in the winter he plays futsal,” explained his mom, Gabi Harrington.
“He just loves the game.”
Defying the odds
When the Harrington family traveled to Fresno for the initial five-day Real Madrid experience, they attempted to keep their expectations realistic.
As the only player attending from Mariposa, they weren’t sure what to think as Aiden would be matched with some fierce competition.
“Aiden was the only kid from Mariposa this year,” Gabi said.
“We were trying not to keep our hopes high; there were well over 100 kids there. We told him, whether we go to Spain or not, we’re so proud of you.”
The realistic and humble approach made the confirmation email even more overwhelming.
“I got the email and I cried. I was shaking,” Gabi recalled.
“We’re just so proud of him.”
The exciting news has motivated Aiden even more. According to his dad, Jordan Harrington, Aiden has already started stepping up his training since the invitation arrived.
“I was definitely excited,” Jordan said.
“The ball has not left his feet in the last two weeks since we found out.”
An international adventure awaits
The upcoming excursion to Europe is sure to be an unforgettable experience for the entire family, balancing Aiden’s athletic development while seeing another part of the world.
“There’s an entire itinerary planned for us,” Gabi explained.
“We’ll get to go to a professional soccer game and I think there’s also a Tapas Tour. There are so many things planned for us.”
The trip will also mark a major milestone in Aiden’s personal growth.
While attending the camp, he will spend the majority of his time separated from his parents, fully immersed in training and bonding with his new teammates.
“This is his first time being away for that long,” Gabi admitted.
“A full five days is a lot for us. I have a little bit of anxiety, but he’s a tough kid and he’ll make friends. It’ll be like an extended sleepover. We will see him on and off, and we’re excited for him. I think he’ll bring back a lot of good technique and skills for his club team.”
Community support needed
A trip of this magnitude comes with substantial financial expenses, covering international flights, lodging and travel logistics. To help offset the costs, the Harrington family has initiated fundraising efforts.
The Mariposa community has already begun stepping up to support Aiden.
“The initial support has been awesome,” Gabi said.
“It’s been great having people genuinely want to help.”
As December approaches, the family remains deeply thankful for the community rallying behind Aiden’s dream.
“We are so grateful for every share, every kind word and every bit of support,” Gabi shared.
“Thank you for believing in Aiden and helping him take this exciting next step in his soccer journey.”
