An early morning crash in Eastern Madera County killed a Mariposa resident and injured his passenger, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Just after 2 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, CHP Oakhurst Area responded to a solo vehicle crash on Highway 41 at Road 420 near Deadwood in Coarsegold.
The driver was operating a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander compact crossover SUV southbound on Highway 41 approaching Road 420 at an unknown speed.
CHP said the driver, for an unknown reason, made an unsafe turn to the left and struck the embankment on the east side of the roadway. The collision caused the vehicle to overturn.
The driver was ejected and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, officials said.
The Madera County Coroner’s Office on March 25 identified the victim as Jason George Smallchild, 35, of Mariposa. The coroner’s office said Smallchild, originally from Canada, had been a Mariposa resident for two years.
Authorities said a male passenger from Canada,
58, was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with moderate injuries following the crash.
The accident is under investigation. Officer Steve Kahout is the investigating officer.
CHP requested the public’s help to identify a woman who stopped to assist at the scene on March 21 at approximately 2:10 a.m.
Officials said the woman left prior to officers obtaining her information and would like to speak with her regarding what she may have witnessed.
