When it comes to things kids are interested in, dinosaurs are usually near the top of the list. That’s why the staff at the Mariposa County Library is so excited about this year’s Summer Reading Program.
Each year, the library hosts a Summer Reading Program in which youth can earn prizes for reaching certain reading goals. This year, the theme is “Unearth a Story” and will be very dinosaur focused.
The library is kicking off the program with a major event on Saturday, June 6 on the Mariposa County Courthouse lawn. It will be held from 10 a.m. to noon.
“We invite families to bring their children to register for our free Summer Reading Program, to earn prizes for reading,” said Mariposa County Librarian Matt Johnson. “All youth ages 18 and below are allowed to participate.”
At the event, there will be several activity stations. Youth can receive a goody bag (while supplies last), take part in dinosaur themed activities such as digging for “fossils,” face painting, geode cutting, a selfie station, bubbles, dinosaur races and more.
“We think those who attend will have a great time. I should say a rawr-some time,” said Johnson. “Our team here puts a lot of work and preparation into this.”
The goal of the program is to prevent learning loss over the summer months and to encourage a lifelong love of reading.
“Each year, we usually have well over 100 children participate,”
Johnson explained.
Prizes this year will also follow the dinosaur theme. The highest level will earn a pass to the local mining and mineral museum.
