Free Comic Book Day is held every first Saturday in May around the United States.
On this day, comic book publishers provide sample copies of individual comics to shops, to promote the hobby. Although there are no comic book shops in Mariposa, the Mariposa County Library is set up as a site to distribute comics on Saturday, May 2.
“I’ve enjoyed comic books since I was a young child, and have introduced my kids to the hobby,” said Mariposa County Librarian Matt Johnson. “We were able to get some bundles of donated copies, plus a few at discounted rates, to allow us to participate this year.”
The library will be giving out free copies (while supplies last) from noon to 2 p.m. on May 2. The event is free to attend, and patrons will have a wide variety of titles to choose from.
“We have some of the classic character titles like Spiderman, and then some new and fun characters,” Johnson said. “Children and adults can come and find something they are interested in. It’s a great way to get kids interested in reading, and a fun way for parents to connect with their children.”
The library is also sending bundles to their branches, who will be holding their own giveaways at certain times. Check with your local branch to learn more.
The Mariposa Library is located at 4978 10th Street. Call (209) 966-2140 for more information.
