Get ready to boo the villains, cheer the heroes and sigh at the romance as the historic Golden Chain Theatre kicks off summer with the all-new modern melodrama, “Double Trouble,” opening Friday, June 5 and running weekends through June 28.

Written in-house and now being produced on the stage for the very first time, “Double Trouble” is a theatrical event like no other, said Jennifer Janine, co-director of the show with Ruthann VanBuren.

GCT’s Melodrama has always been about high energy and crowd engagement,” Janine said, “but now – in our 59th season – Double Trouble takes it to the next level by offering two shows for the price of one.

Act 1 – Pretty in Pinot

Pour yourself a glass of nostalgia for the first half of the GCT double feature set in the lush vineyards of 1980s Sonoma County. “Pretty in Pinot” brings all the “rad, tubular energy of the decade to the stage,” complete with a synth-heavy soundtrack that will have you humming.

This segment features an unlikely hero rocking a trusty ten-speed bike,” Janine shared. Can he pedal his way to victory and save the vineyard or will the villain crush his grapes – and his dreams?

Act 2 – The Bitterroot Backwoods Bakeoff

After intermission, theater-goers will be whisked away to the deep Ozarks for “The Bitterroot Backwoods Bakeoff,” a hilarious romp capturing all the high-stakes tension of a modern television baking competition flipped on its head with rustic charm.

Expect pretentious celebrity judges, secret ingredients and epic kitchen catastrophes. It’s a recipe for pure unadulterated laughter.

Janine said the double feature marks a unique moment for the Golden Chain Theatre, as both scripts were written completely in-house. Together VanBuren and Janine have crafted a fast-paced, side-splitting experience that honors classic melodrama traditions while injecting fresh modern comedy.

And no Golden Chain melodrama would be complete without the legendary Golden Chain Garter Girls, who will kick off the evening with their traditional, high-kicking cancan!

Double Trouble” is rated G, making it a perfect summer outing for the entire family. Audience participation is highly encouraged here and guests will be given free popcorn to munch on – or to toss when the villain takes the stage.

The theater saloon will be open before the show and during intermission, serving up a variety of refreshing drinks and delicious snacks to keep your energy high.
