Editor,
This is directed to Elizabeth Lopez Calderon:
Please don’t feel embarrassed or sad that you hit the Gazette’s front page on March 26.
Many of us, your neighbors in Catheys Valley and elsewhere, think of you as heroic. You saw creatures in need. And you did something about it.
You knew it would be costly and impact your ability to care for yourself. Yet you perhaps thought, “35 — well, what’s one more? Poor dog, no one’s taking care of it, I have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and you made it part of your happy, loving family.
However, your neighbors at Porta Yosemite have the same right. They worry about fleas, ticks and other health issues.
We who admire your kindness hope that our sheriff’s staff can find homes for your furry family. Every day they see children, adults and critters needing care.
Sheriff Jeremy Briese can help you connect with a county-sponsored visitor who could become your friend, and help you with your needs. Or you could volunteer at school or with a neighbor and listen to children read. They’d love it — and you.
Your heart will lift as you gaze at the open space around you: birds, wild flowers, a blue bellied lizard.
You are not alone. We, your neighbors, share your loneliness. Like you, Most of us have lost a spouse, best friend or cherished critter. Yet we can all find ways to pursue happiness.
Maybe with just one needy dog.
