Brett C. Stiles, age 78, died peacefully on May 27, 2026, in Mariposa.
He was the beloved brother of Michael R. Stiles (Leslie), Graham Stiles (Nancy, deceased) and Jacquelyn Lucard (Richard, deceased).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carson A. and Jacqueline Rankin Stiles and is survived by his stepmother, Joan Edenborn Stiles (recently deceased) as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Brett grew up in Ambler, Pa., and graduated from Upper Dublin High School in 1965 and the University of Pennsylvania in 1969. After graduation from Penn he moved west, first to Denver, Colo., and then to Oakland, Calif., before settling in Mariposa in 1983.
He was deeply involved with the local community. When told volunteers were needed to help with Mariposa youth sports he coached the Team Rascals soccer team for several years. Also, he was on call as a substitute teacher at Mariposa Elementary School for 20 years.
Brett played in the local adult softball league and was an avid walker, covering many a Highway 49 North miles on a daily basis.
As a result of what he described as a series of serendipitous events, he came to reside in a rustic cabin in Mariposa, making and selling hats for a living. He was the one man owner/operator of B! Wear Cap Company selling his handmade products locally, nationally and overseas via his website.
In 2024 he retired and closed the business.
He was a wise, caring and independent man who lived a unique, principled life completely unconcerned about wealth or status. He set his own standards, finding satisfaction and contentment in the bucolic woods of the Sierra foothills.
