Yukiye Carbaugh passed away peacefully at 93 on Aug. 9, 2026, at a care facility in Castro Valley, Calif.
Born on Sept. 12, 1932, in Los Angeles, she was the daughter of Kuntaro and Rui Shinozaki.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, her four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her brother, Masa Shinozaki and her children, Karen Kinoshita Banas, Robin Kinoshita, Ken Kinoshita and Steve Kinoshita; and her granddaughter, Veronica Gerhart, and her great-grandson, Russell Gerhart..
Yuki grew up in Arroyo Grande helping with the family farm. When she was nine, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, her family was forced to leave their home and be incarcerated at the Gila River War Relocation Center in Arizona. After the war, they lived in Mesa, Ariz., for a year before moving back to California to begin again.
Later, Yuki moved to Los Angeles, working during the day and taking college classes at night. When her parents started a strawberry farm in San Jose, she went back to help them. She married Joe Carbaugh, and they made their home in San Jose, where they raised their family.
She began working at Security Cold Storage, where she found she excelled in accounting. While working and raising her family, Yuki continued taking night college courses in accounting and learned how to play the guitar and piano. After 20 years, she earned her Associates College Degree in Accounting.
This led to a successful career in accounting and eventually to her job as Chief Fiscal Officer of the Mt. Pleasant School District in San Jose.
In 1988, Yuki and Joe retired to Mariposa, where she stayed active in the community by working at the Mariposa Counseling Center, volunteering with the Chowchilla Mountain Women’s Club, participating at the Mariposa United Methodist Church, tutoring elementary school students and serving on the Mariposa County Civil Grand Jury.
She will be remembered for her playful spirit, her creativity, her unwavering love for family and her ability to find joy in life’s simple moments.
