Sierra National Forest officials announced the return of seasonal prescribed burning.

The CAL FIRE Madera-Mariposa Merced unit conducted a vegetation management burn on Oct. 28-29 off Road 619 in Ahwahnee. The burn consisted of annual grass, oak woodland and heavy brush totaling about 112 acres.

Smoke was visible from nearby neighborhoods.

The vegetation management burn was used to protect the community of Ahwahnee, the Highway 49 South corridor and is part of a strategic plan to prevent disastrous fires, officials said, like the Harlow Fire in 1961.

The management burn was also said to help eliminate noxious weeds, fuel loading and ladder fuels and to promote native grasses.
