Yosemite High School traveled to Merced College on Saturday, March 28, to compete in the Merced County Championship swim meet, a long-standing event that brought together 22 schools for a high level of competition with more than 500 athletes.
Competing against schools from across the region including El Capitan, Merced, Turlock, Oakdale, Pitman, Chowchilla and Fowler, head coach Rae Rockey said Yosemite swimmers rose to the occasion, showing grit and determination while achieving multiple personal best times.
“Kate Vanlandingham pushed her way to her fastest time in the 100 breaststroke, delivering a swim that was both powerful and graceful,” Rockey said.
The coach said breaststroke requires precise timing, a strong pull and kick and the ability to stay controlled while generating power.
“Kate’s strong pull downs, powerful kick and steady tempo showed her growing confidence and control in the water, as her continued effort in practice translates into success in competition.”
Alice Bond showcased a powerful and skilled backstroke, continuing to drop time and earn another personal best, according to Rockey.
“Her improvement comes from a commitment to refining her technique and it showed in her clean turns, steady rhythm and confident finish. She brings a positive, can-do mental attitude to every race, which continues to drive her progress.”
Kaiden Rockey delivered an impressive performance at the meet, powering his way to first place finishes in both the Individual Medley and the 50 Freestyle.
Rockey broke championship meet records that stood since 2015 in both events.
Rockey has additionally now broken Yosemite High School swim records previously set in 2015 and 2023 in both the Individual Medley and the 50 Freestyle.
“His focus and effort in the water continue to set him apart,” his coach said.
Rockey said the Merced County Championship meet provided valuable experience and showed that Yosemite swimmers are continuing to rise to the challenge as the season progresses.
The team thanked parents and families for “the countless hours they give and for the encouragement they bring to our athletes, along with the Yosemite High School staff for everything they do behind the scenes.”
“We also recognize our bus driver, Mike Schuler, for getting our team to and from competitions safely and on time,” Rockey said, “and our Athletic Director Sandra Wade whose leadership and dedication help keep our program organized, supported and moving forward.”
Rockey noted the team’s appreciation for Coach Brandon Brokaw for “his extensive knowledge of swimming and technical skill which continues to make a positive impact on our athletes and program.”
