Mariposa comes together for soccer, art and the community

This summer has been one to remember for Mariposa Soccer as the community embraced the excitement of the FIFA World Cup through a series of events that brought people together in parks, restaurants, the library and on the soccer field.

Over the past month, hundreds of community members participated in World Cup watch parties, youth activities, Panini sticker swaps, World Cup trivia, a “Design Your Own World Cup Ball” event at the Mariposa County Library and the World Cup Passport Challenge.

The enthusiasm shown by families of all ages highlighted just how much soccer continues to unite the community.

One of the most meaningful projects of the summer was the creation of a vibrant World Cup-inspired mural at Woodland Park on Mariposa Soccer’s 40-foot storage container.

The mural was made possible through a partnership with the Mariposa Arts Council, which awarded Mariposa Soccer a Community + Art Grant to bring the vision to life.

Working alongside professional muralists Clay River and Liz Encoyand, dozens of volunteers — players, parents, grandparents, coaches and community members — spent hours painting the mural together on July 12.

The turnout was inspiring, with families arriving throughout the day ready to grab a paintbrush and help create something lasting for the community.

“This mural is so much more than paint on a storage container,” said Mariposa Soccer President Kass Bissmeyer.

“It’s a reflection of who we are as a community. Watching so many families come together to create something beautiful for Woodland Park was incredibly moving. We are deeply grateful to the Mariposa Arts Council for believing in this project and helping make it possible.”

Organizers thanked Austen Harrelson with Saints of Paint for prepping, priming and painting the container as a donation to Mariposa Soccer so the mural could be completed.

The celebration of community continued with Mariposa Soccer’s inaugural Woodland Cup, a one-day adult 5v5 tournament featuring our local Adult League teams.

Beyond the friendly competition, the tournament had a larger purpose: supporting the next generation of high school varsity athletes.

Thanks to the generosity of the participating teams, tournament registration fees raised $1,000, which Mariposa Soccer will donate directly to the Mariposa County High School varsity soccer programs to help purchase equipment and other needs for the upcoming season.

“We’re incredibly thankful to every player who participated,” Bissmeyer said.

“Our adult league has become such a positive part of our soccer community and it’s fitting that the inaugural Woodland Cup not only created a fun new tradition but also gave back to our high school athletes.”

While the World Cup festivities have wrapped up, the excitement is just beginning for Mariposa Soccer’s competitive club program.

The club teams have officially kicked off preseason training and are preparing for another exciting NorCal season.

Next up is the annual Mariposa Soccer Performance Camp, Aug. 21–23, where players will train with professional coaches from Southern California, including special guest Paco Torres, former Club América professional player.

The weekend also features one of the favorite community traditions — SoccerFest on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Woodland Park — a fun-filled day of soccer, games, food and activities for the entire community.

As Mariposa Soccer continues to grow, one thing remains constant: soccer is about much more than wins and losses.

“It is about bringing people together, creating opportunities for young athletes, building lasting friendships and leaving the community stronger than we found it,” Bissmeyer said.

“This summer was a reminder of what can happen when an entire community comes together around a shared passion.”

Mariposa Soccer organizers are looking forward to seeing everyone back on the field in the fall.
