Kids First continues its support

The Mariposa County Schools Foundation, more commonly known as Kids First, is an organization which augments classroom projects through grants to teachers.

Since its inception in 1992, Kids First has funded over $1 million in grants.

In calendar year 2025, teachers were awarded nearly $53,000 in 49 separate grants.

Project titles included Fluency Through Music, Local Birds of Catheys Valley, Makerspace STEM Center and Social Emotional Development.

A list of awards over the years is available on the website kidsfirstmariposa.org, and a quick scan of the list illustrates the variety of projects funded.

Grants are awarded in three phases: a Fall Mini Grant set, a Spring Mini Grant set and a Large Grant set. (A reminder to teachers: 2026 Fall Mini Grant applications are due in the District office no later than Sept. 30.)

Funding comes primarily from the annual June Jubilee, hosted by a board member at Jerseydale Ranch. The Jubilee features a catered dinner in an outdoor setting, with both a live auction and a silent auction of items donated by Mariposans.

“It is always a fine event in a beautiful setting,” said board president Lori Ritter

Kids First, like many volunteer organizations, is always looking for new help. Running the June Jubilee is certainly a big task, but joining the organization as a sustaining member is also helpful.

Ordinary individual membership is $25, family membership is $35, with several levels of premium membership.

Another major way to help is joining the board of directors. Every month important decisions need to be made about how funds are to be managed and awarded, and the organization is seeking new talent.

The principal qualification is a desire to help improve the quality of education for Mariposa County’s students.

“We are grateful for all support we receive, from being a member, to attending the Jubilee, to jumping in with both feet and helping,” said Ritter.
