One of the big events of the year in Mariposa County is coming next week.
The 39th annual Hornitos Patrons Club Flea Market will be held on Sunday, Oct. 4. The event runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is based in the county park in Hornitos and spread throughout the hamlet.
“This is an old-time, homecoming flea market,” said Mary Ann Visher, a member of the Patrons Club and one of the organizers of the event.
Booth space is still available for the event. It costs $60 to rent a 10’ X 15’ space at the flea market. To reserve a space, visit hornitospatronsclub.org and follow the steps. Payments must be made online through Venmo.
“Any treasure you may be looking for, you may be able to find,” said Visher.
She also said the flea market acts as sort of a “homecoming” where people come out to meet old friends and even new friends. “It is a community gathering.”
Vendors have to set up either the night before or early that morning and must park their vehicles in the parking lot at the Catholic church.
Parking, in general, is always a challenge for the flea market with cars lining Hornitos Road, Bear Valley Road and any spots drivers can find. In many ways, that is part of the intrigue of the market.
But as Visher noted, “people go in an out” during the day, so there are opportunities to find parking around the town.
Visher said some people even stay at hotels in Mariposa the night before just to get a jump on getting to the flea market.
As always, breakfast will be offered for sale by the Masons and there will be food vendors on hand with a wide variety of offerings during the market.
The variety of goods to be offered would be hard to list as the range is incredible. Officially, items are listed as antiques, collectibles, repurposed goods, handmade goods or garage sale items.
But as anyone who has experienced the Hornitos Flea Market knows, you just never know what you might find when visiting the vendor booths at the event.
“Come out and enjoy yourself and find your treasures,” said Visher.
The town of Hornitos is located on Hornitos Road as well as Bear Valley Road. From Mariposa, go west to Catheys Valley and turn north onto Hornitos Road. People can also take Highway 49 North from Hornitos or Coulterville and turn west onto Bear Valley Road.
