After a 13 day break, the Mariposa County High School flag football team returned to the field for a battle at Riverbank High School on Sept. 16.
Mariposa’s girls showed a few signs of early rust but then quickly put the slow start behind them, winning 31-0.
“We got off to a slow start on both offense and defense. That has kind of been something that has happened to us a lot during our away games,” said MCHS coach Tammi Richards.
“We would prefer that we come out hot from the get-go but that isn’t always the case. The good news is that the girls stay composed, know what they need to do and eventually get things moving in the right direction. And once we get going, it’s really hard to stop us.”
MCHS quarterback Bailey Costa “continues to have tremendous poise in the pocket and makes the right reads at the right time,” Richards said.
“She knows when we need the short yardage for a first down and she knows when to expose the defense on the long ball,” Richards added.

Whitney Marcis and Alicia Garcia remain Mariposa’s go-to receivers and both scored touchdowns to lead the way.
Richards said Rio Pelote “has been money” on short yardage receptions while Dakota Costa and Maryn Fluharty continue to dominate on defense in their roles as rushers.
“Their aggressive pursuit put a ton of pressure on the Riverbank offense and they had to resort to bailout plays to try and stay alive,” she said.
Richards further stated that the defense is “really gelling and understanding their assignments” and coverage areas.
“That is evident by the fact that they didn’t allow any points to be scored. Cora Grasso had a great pick-six, where she made Riverbank look sluggish as she zigged and zagged 22 yards for the score,” Richards said.
Mariposa was set to travel to the Orestimba Junior Varsity tournament on Saturday. They blew out Gustine 69-0 on Sept. 21.
The Grizzlies then travel to who coach Richards believes is the team to beat, River Islands, on Tuesday.
“They are undefeated and we would love to be the first team to put a L in their column. They want us as bad as we want them, so it’s going to be a great showdown,” Richards said.
The Grizzlies will also play at Millennium on Monday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m.
MCHS improved to 3-2 overall. Details from the game against Gustine (and all the other action) will be included in next week’s edition of the newspaper.
