Captain David Gene Mackey, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away on May 27, 2026 at the age of 87. He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Jan, the love of his life, who preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 2024.

Born on June 6, 1938 in Spokane, Wash., David answered the call to serve his country and proudly joined the United States Marine Corps. He retired as a Captain after 21 years of distinguished service.

The Marine Corps was not just his career — it defined his very life. He carried the values of honor, courage and commitment in everything he did, and he remained a proud Marine until the day he died.

He met the love of his life, Jan, and they shared a deep and abiding marriage built on faith, loyalty and devotion. Her passing left a profound hole in his heart, yet he often spoke of the joy of knowing he would one day be with her again. In his final years, he found comfort in the promise of their reunion.

David was a man who loved working with his hands, especially with wood. Whether building furniture or crafting thoughtful gifts for his family, his workshop was his sanctuary. Many in the family still cherish the pieces he made with love and care.

As a father, he was tough but deeply loving. He raised his children with strong values, high expectations and unwavering love. He taught them the importance of discipline, integrity and hard work — lessons they carry with them today. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren and his face would light up whenever they were around.

He is survived by his children, Debra, Scott, Doug, Theresa, Roger, Cheryl, Debbie, Mark, Keith, David, Susan and their spouses; his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren and many dear friends and fellow Marines.

A proud Marine, a loving husband and a steadfast father and grandfather, David lived a life of service, love and quiet strength. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the principles he instilled.

A funeral service will be held at Palm Memorial-Sierra Chapel, 49269 Road 426, Oakhurst, on June 29, 2026, from 11 a.m. to noon.

A graveside service will be held at Oakhill Cemetery, 40188 Highway 41, Oakhurst on June 29, 2026, from 1-2 p.m.
