A unique program has fostered connection between Mariposa County High School athletes and youngsters who look up to them.
Through the high school’s new Future Friday Night Lights program, MCHS Grizzly football players can interact with and form positive bonds with elementary school students. Essentially, they serve as mentors and friends to the students.
“We were so happy to launch that this year,” said MCHS varsity head coach Chase Pometta.
Players from MCHS went to Mariposa Elementary and Woodland Elementary to visit with students there. They share high fives, do coloring pages and even have developed a pen pal program.
“The look on the elementary students’ faces was priceless,” Pometta said of one recent visit.
“Kids are getting to know each other and spending time together.
It’s in an effort to remind everybody that this is about our entire county (coming together). This isn’t just about the football players,” Pometta said.
“You don’t need to play football to be a part of this (supporting the football team). You don’t need to be a cheerleader or in the band. You can come support this. It’s not just for those on the field. It’s been great.”
MCHS principal Celeste Azevedo echoed Pometta’s sentiments, alluding to the fact that the program builds confidence in the young elementary students and is a positive experience for the high school students, who serve as role models.
“Whether you are a player or a fan, coming together as one community and one county is what it’s all about,” Azevedo said.
Many of the children who participated came to Friday night’s football win over Gustine and were sporting shirts from the program. It’s all part of Pometta’s vision that the football team can help foster unity in the community.
