A wrestling star at a community college in California died after falling at Yosemite on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Park officials have released scant information about the incident, but it has been widely reported in various media outlets.
Ryan George, 19, a sophomore at Santa Rosa Junior College was the victim who died after apparently slipping while hiking with friends near Illilouette Fall.
The Mariposa County coroner’s office was called to the scene, according to police logs from that day.
Yosemite National Park officials would only say that “park rangers responded to an incident involving Ryan George in Yosemite National Park. The investigation is complete and the incident was determined to be an accident. No additional information is available at this time.”
According to Yahoo Sports, George was listed as a native of Santa Rosa in the school’s media guide and graduated from Montgomery High School in that city.
Last season, it was reported he enjoyed a strong run through the state championship in the 197-pound division. He entered ranked sixth in the state and finished with five victories, including to falls, before finishing in third place.
“If you knew Ryan, you know he was one of the most genuine, positive people you could ever meet,” his coach, Fred Duerr, told Yahoo Sports. “He had this way of lighting up a room, making your feel welcome and bringing out the best in everyone around him.”
Illilouette Fall is a 381-foot waterfall on the Illilouette Creek tributary of the Merced River in Yosemite National Park. The trail leading to the fall begins at Glacier Point and is two miles to the area of the waterfall.
