The drama group at Mariposa County High School is sure to get some laughs during their fall production next month.
Under the direction of Kate Hall, students will be performing “The Trials of Robin Hood,” a comedy by Will Averill.
“It’s been amazing, these kids are very dedicated,” said Hall.
“It seems like they came in knowing how to behave backstage and how to do acting onstage.”
In this production King Richard is forced to try and figure out what happened in his kingdom while he was away at the Crusades.
Told from the perspectives of Robin himself, Maid Marian and Prince John, this humorous story combines three different stories into one — and with three different endings, the audience then gets to decide which one is true.
The cast includes: Robin Hood – Connor Finnley, Maid Marian – Mia Winsor, King Richard – Jasmine Martinez, Prince John – Henry Lower, Sheriff of Nottingham – Jane Adcock, Friar Tuck – Grace Welch, Janice – Sylvester Maccarone, Herald – Scarlet Milani, Will Scarlett – Everly Johnson, Much the Miller’s Son – Harmony Buckner, Guy of Gisborne – Canyon Carter, Edward of Locksley – James Turpin, Esmerelda of Locksley – Aleah Brum, Alan A Dale – Sonja Truggsland, Lord Duncan – Harmony Buckner Abbess – Aelah Brum, Little John – James Turpin, King’s Deer – Natalie Keyes, Lady Ellen – Scarlett Milani, Evil Lord – Issac Chriswell, Honest Dave the Tinker – Gianna Marks, Lady Lucy – Aurora Tyrosroutis, Archery Butt – Paola Ahmadi, Sister Stephanie – Sylvester Maccarone, Sister Elena – Teegaen Cavallaro Savoie, Nathaniel Piper – Amy Weightman, William Church – Evelyn Carter, Daniel Boyle – Phoebe Davis, Bart Common – Aria Kornaros, Finn Lucky – Gianna Marks and Tobias – Paola Ahmadi.
A production can’t happen without the crew, which includes Karessa Rusaib-Smith, Evan Rule, Maggie Tafoya,Gray Rule, Felix Gore, Zander Standen, Devon Foster, Sara Blalock and Owen Eastwood.
Finley is a senior this year and is excited to be taking on the three roles of Robin Hood.
“The hardest part for this show is that I have the most lines I’ve ever had,” Finley said.
“Memorizing all the lines has been a learning curve and I don’t have a lot of backstage time during the show.”
Finley is up for to the challenge.
“I like that I bring versatility to the role and that I’m flexible enough to play all three versions.”
Davis is a freshman this year and this is her first play with the MCHS drama club.
“I play one of the merry men and one of the merry women,” Davis said.
“I went through a phase where I wouldn’t smile for pictures but I would make silly faces. Now I really like making faces on stage and it’s fun.”
Being a part of drama is more than just doing a play, it’s being part of a family.
“I like the community of it all and everyone is so friendly,” Davis said.
“It’s kind of scary to be onstage but it becomes less worrisome because you’re standing up there with everyone and it’s fun.”
Along with putting on the play, students learn skills they’ll hold on to long after high school.
“I mostly want them to have fun and build connections with each other,” Hall explained.
“I love that they get experience with acting, memorizing lines and public speaking.”
Self expression is an enormous piece of drama club.
“It’s really fun for them to create in every aspect,” Hall said.
“We have lots of students painting and creating sets and designing costumes.”
The cast and crew have made significant progress with the sets and costumes.
“We’ve been ahead of the game on just about everything,” Hall said.
“We’ve got bushes up already and we’ll have trees eventually.”
The play will take place at MCHS in the Fiester Auditorium Nov. 7-9 at 7 p.m.
