Although not a lot of official information is available, what is known is a major tragedy was averted last Friday evening in Mariposa.

About a half an hour before the weekly Music on the Green concert was going to start at the Art Park in Mariposa, a pine tree snapped and came crashing to the ground, trapping several people in the branches.

Kristie Mitchell, the public information officer for the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office, said the first call came at 6:58 p.m. on Friday.

Then, she said, multiple 911 calls came into the dispatch center about the incident.

There were injuries, but Mitchell didn’t have any details. A witness at the scene said it appeared several people were injured but that all of them were able to be treated by local rescue workers.

Responding to the scene were the sheriff’s office, CAL FIRE, Mariposa County Fire, Mercy Ambulance and others.

The witness also said people waiting for the concert to start jumped in and began helping those injured before rescue workers arrived. Mitchell confirmed that happened during the incident.

Rescue workers were visible assisting people once they arrived on the scene.

It remains unknown the extent of any injuries.

The scheduled concert did take place after the scene was cleared.

Mariposa County Public Works handled cleaning up the fallen tree, said Mitchell.
