The score didn’t reflect the effort put in by the Grizzlies varsity girls basketball team as they were defeated by the Ripon Christian Knights 43-38 last week at MCHS.
“They’re just all heart and effort,” said coach Joe Lewis.
“They fight and just don’t quit.”
Junior varsity started their game out a little rocky but prevailed once again, winning 55-23.
“They only continue to improve,” said JV coach Tammi Richards.
Ripon Christian struck first during the varsity game, quickly going up 6-0.
Mia Hansen got the Grizzlies on the scoreboard with a layup.
Kylee Hutchings got in on the scoring action and hit a three-point field goal.
The score was 13-10 in favor of the Knights to end the first quarter.
Ripon Christian got the scoring going early in the second quarter with two points followed by Haley Baars with a three-point shot for the Grizzlies.
Denise Corona scored two for MCHS to tie it at 15-15.
The Knights held the lead at halftime at 19-15.
Celina Heard came up big with two three-pointers to put the Grizzlies in the lead at the start of the third quarter.
Ripon Christian continued to capitalize on free throws when Heard came up with another three-pointer before the end of the third quarter.
MCHS held the lead at 30-25 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Demi Camorlinga was fouled right out of the gate and made the free throw for the Grizzlies.
Both teams continued to battle it out with lead going back and forth throughout the final quarter.
Hutchings hit another three-pointer but the Knights capitalized on turnovers and free throws in the final minutes.
Ripon Christian took the win at 43-38.
“They (Ripon Christian) have a lot more structure rolling the pick and roll offense,” Lewis said.
“It was a good experience for us to figure out.”
Scoring leaders for the night were Heard with nine points, Hutchings with eight points and Hansen with seven points.
Hutchings and Denise Corona had four rebounds while Hansen finished with three.
The Grizzlies were right back at it the next night on Dec. 6 as they traveled to play against the Calaveras Red Hawks.
Calaveras took the win over the Grizzlies, 71-29.
Hansen had nine points while Heely Patterson had four points and four rebounds.
Corona had five rebounds while Demi Camorlinga had four.
“I’m just proud of them,” said Lewis.
“I’m proud they’re willing to commit; it’s tough to do.”
Preseason continued as MCHS hosted Turlock Christian High School on Dec. 9.
The Grizzlies dominated, winning 59-15.
Hutchings had 16 points and nine rebounds while Corona had nine points and six rebounds.
Heard and Izzy Whited both had eight points and five rebounds.
Camorlinga had nine points while Hansen had nine rebounds and Alexa Morrow had five rebounds for MCHS.
The Grizzlies traveled to Summerville to play against the Bears on Dec. 11.
Results were not available at press time.
Next up, MCHS will host Buhach Colony in the Loyd Hobby Gymnasium on Dec. 12.
JV will take the court at 5 p.m. followed by varsity at 6:30 p.m.
