Simbang Gabi (Night Mass), also known as Misa de Gallo, is a unique Filipino Christmas advent tradition embedded in Filipino culture.
It started during the Spanish colonization and early years of Christianity in the Philippines. It is a nine-day novena mass leading to Christmas Eve held at dawn to accommodate farmers to fulfill their religious duties before they head out to work at the crack of dawn, hence; it is originally called Misa de Gallo or “Mass of the rooster” coinciding with the crowing of the rooster in the early morning.
Over time, this beloved tradition evolved with modern practices and evening mass or Simbang Gabi is held to accommodate more participants.
Celebrating Simbang Gabi is not just a spiritual journey, but it also impacts the social aspect of the community. Families and friends often come together to attend the Simbang Gabi, and the atmosphere is warm, joyful and hopeful.
After each mass, people will gather outside the church where a line of stalls selling different mouth-watering local delicacies and the festivities continue; greeting each other and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.
Filipino immigrants here in United States and other parts of the world hold Simbang Gabi mass to help them feel connected to home during the holidays when they miss their families. This celebration helps foster sense of belonging, cultural connection, strengthens cultural identity and the bonds between the Filipino community.
