I read your short article on the tree falling at the Art Park on Friday evening Aug. 14, just before the concert started.
It was a huge bull pine tree growing on the opposite bank of Mariposa Creek which simply broke in two about 15 feet above the ground and came crashing across the creek with the top branches landing next to the restroom.
While several people were hit, one person in particular was trapped underneath a large branch right next to the large rocks beside the restroom. This individual suffered what appeared to be a double fracture of the lower left leg, her foot twisted in an untenable direction.
As you reported, numerous agencies responded almost immediately, the first call coming in at 6:58 p.m. That call, being placed just moments after the incident occurred, was made by a SCOPE volunteer, Susan Stonum.
Being on patrol in the park that evening, Susan heard and saw the incident occur. Checking and finding someone being seriously injured, she immediately radioed dispatch, advising them of the incident. That, of course, generated multiple agency response to the scene.
In previous years, SCOPE regularly patrolled “Friday/Saturday Nights on the Green.” The effort waned in more recent years because of the low number of SCOPE volunteers in the township area.
This summer, Susan endeavored to re-start the patrol, engaging SCOPE volunteer Stacy Potter to help. SCOPE volunteers do not “carry,” per se, but what they do carry is a radio, giving them immediate access to emergency services via the sheriff’s office dispatch, a valuable contribution to the community.
