County officials are given the all clear to apply for a couple of grants that would benefit the local airport.
During the consent agenda discussion at the Aug. 19 meeting of the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors, the board was asked to approve the submission of two airport grants.
Mariposa County Public Works Deputy Director Samuel Cerveny explained the grants are a continuation of staff efforts to improve the airport.
“We’ve made improvements,” he said, including but not limited to tree work, light infrastructure and interior improvements.
Cerveny hopes the department will receive additional funds from the FAA in 2028 to rehabilitate the runway.
A future project is to replace the outdated, aging AWOS system, he said. The current system is so old that the company has loaned the airport some extra radios that were not in use.
Revenues are strong from rents and fuel sales, Cerveny said, and improvements continue to be made with the goal of attracting more visitors to the airport.
The two grants are as follows:
• Airport Infrastructure Grant
• Federal Aviation Administration grant for Airport Improvement Plan
Both grants require a 10 percent match, which will come from the Airport Operations Fund 6610.
Both applications require budget action to transfer funds to the appropriate airport rehabilitation fund line for amounts of $164,523 and $142,477, respectively.
“Thank you for the work you’re doing at the airport,” District 1 Supervisor Rosemarie Smallcombe said.
By a 5-0 vote, the supervisors approved the entire consent agenda — including the two grant applications.
