Prescribed burns set for Nov. 15-16 in Ahwahnee

The Yosemite Gateway Prescribed Burn Cooperative (YGPBC) is excited to announce an upcoming Learn & Burn workshop to kick off the 2025 prescribed burn season in Mariposa and Madera counties.

This free, hands-on educational event is designed to raise awareness about prescribed burning and provide community members with the knowledge, skills and resources needed to safely and effectively use prescribed fire on their properties.

Event schedule

• Learn & Burn — Classroom day at Sierra Meadows, Ahwahnee, Saturday, Nov. 15, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A classroom based introduction to prescribed fire covering topics such as burn planning, safety, weather and firing operations. This session provides the foundational knowledge for prescribed burning. Registration is required.

• Learn & Burn — Field Day (weather permitting) at Sierra Meadows, Ahwahnee on Sunday, Nov. 16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A hands-on opportunity to apply the skills learned in the classroom during a live prescribed burn. Participants will gain direct experience with ignition techniques, safety protocols, and burn operations. Registration is required.

Why prescribed burning?

Prescribed burns are controlled, intentionally set fires planned to occur under specified parameters, known as a prescription and applied to achieve specific objectives. Prescribed burns are a critical tool used to reduce wildfire risk and promote ecological health in California.

Funding and Support

This project is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing GHG emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment — particularly in disadvantaged communities.

The Cap-and-Trade program also creates a financial incentive for industries to invest in clean technologies and develop innovative ways to reduce pollution.
